How do you define soul? This magical word, so overused, regains all its nobility with Voodoo, the second album by the prodigy D'Angelo, who first came to notice in 1995 with the very groovy Brown Sugar, an irresistible ballad that earned him his first accolades. Here, D'Angelo proves that he is elsewhere, very far from the formatted R&B of his peers. It brings to mind Curtis Mayfield, Prince; you get lost in Send It On, you groove to Left & Right (featuring Redman and Method Man). A magical, dark and sometimes hard-to-access record that established itself upon release as an essential.
