Award-winning singer-songwriter and leading British jazz vocalist Zara McFarlane releases the album paying tribute to the great jazzwoman who inspired her own artistic journey and whose centenary year is marked in 2024: Sarah Vaughan. "Sweet Whispers" is more than just a glimpse of some of Vaughan's most popular songs. It is not hard to imagine the immense task involved in selecting these songs, after all, Vaughan's recording career spanned 50 years, with nearly 60 albums (plus 30 once compilations and box sets are included). Through thoughtful choice, a selection of songs, formed over months in collaboration with the producer, and the album's clarinetist and saxophonist, Giacomo Smith - Zara travels through Sarah Vaughan's musical life, from the first to the last recording, bringing to life and breathing new life into some of her best and lesser-known songs. "Sweet Whispers - Celebrating Sarah Vaughan" was recorded analog at Durham Studios, London. Giacomo assembled a cast of musicians - Joe Webb on piano, Ferg Ireland on double bass, Jas Kayser on drums, Marlon Hibbert on Steel Pan and Gabriella Swallow on cello - to record 11 tracks live to tape; with minimal overdubs, the recording retained a live and vintage feel.
