Traveling between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, Lhasa de Sela gained international recognition with the release of her first album, La Llorona, in 1997. The story began at Les Bobards, an iconic venue in Montreal's cultural scene, where Yves Desrosiers and Lhasa shared their passion for music on stage, performing Mexican songs and jazz classics such as Fever.
A year later, in 1994, Yves and Lhasa recorded some of their interpretations in a studio in the Basses-Laurentides region. Singing the traditional songs of her childhood, Lhasa learned to convey emotions and discovered her own voice, accompanied by Yves Desrosiers' unique guitar playing, which blended various styles. One can clearly hear the early beginnings of the sound they would solidify together on La Llorona.
