On their debut album, The Dial, the Los Angeles trio – producer Cole Thompson and vocalists DaCosta and Jean Carter – considers disparate ideas around the concept of time. The record functions as a meditation, but postulates that to truly grasp the concept and all of its ambient qualities, one must remain rooted in the present. They seem to pluck their songs from the cosmos, seizing a moment of inspiration – a loop here, a turn of phrase there – and proceeding in a stream-of-consciousness. The result is staggering: a kaleidoscopic journey through sorrow and joy, moments of frustration and hope. Their voices move effortlessly from elastic rap to gilded melodies, while the production traverses time, pulling together influences – from slinky house-meets-G-funk to Dilla-time boogie to dance-punk – all gathered into one singular whole.
