Brussels-based band Yôkaï is now made up of eight multi-instrumentalists from the jazz, rock and improvised music scenes. Originally steeped in Ethio-jazz, oriental-psychedelic and Afro-kraut influences, their musical footprint is now evolving into areas where raw improvisation plays a more essential role and transcends stylistic barriers. Difficult to classify, Yôkaï's music is a contemporary synthesis of 'ethnic' jazz and the soundtracks of Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, all tinged with analog synths and psychedelic rock. Yôkaï follows in the footsteps of a new iconoclastic Belgian scene nurtured by jazz but artistically open (MDCIII, Dans Dans, Black Flower, STUFF., ECHT!). 'Coup de grâce' is their second album on the Brussels label Humpty Dumpty Records.
