Alto is offering today in a single box set this complete collection that summarizes and completes the previous releases. This is truly a significant event. We even go beyond the complete works here, given what complements it (five other orchestral pieces and the world premiere of the 10th in 1954 by Mravinski). Shostakovich's symphonic production spans from 1926 to 1972; its unity and coherence (within a heterogeneous body of work) have been praised, which does not prevent its diversity, a reaction to the vicissitudes experienced. Besides 1954, the interpretations here range from 1962 to 2015: so much has happened during these years! And the quality is in no way inferior to the quantity. We mention "legendary conductors": two-thirds of these conductors were close to the composer, friends, students, his son of course, collaborators, and creators of his works. This speaks to the significance of this testimony, its authenticity, and its relevance. Therefore, it is no surprise that the breath that lifts all these interpretations is palpable, with the rendering of inflections serving in turn to express the grand official, the deep personal lyricism, the pathetic accents of distress, the biting sarcasm...
