The eighth and new refined retro-futuristic synth-pop opus from Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride, aka Xeno & Oaklander, is named after "the study of what not to do, a negative image of a positive, the other side, the other": Via Negativa (in the doorway light). The album is both visionary in spirit and precise in execution, a contrast that is at the heart of the duo's enduring alchemy. Embryonic piano sketches were translated into nuanced modular systems, which McBride enriched with "harmonic padding," tuned percussion, and a spectral transfer device capable of "rendering spasms of overtonal rhythmic filigree." Despite the technological complexity of their art, the songs require no deciphering on an emotional level - they are widescreen technicolor anthems of the cybernetic age.
