It was during his stay in Mannheim between October 1777 and March 1778 that Mozart was commissioned to compose two quartets with flute (K285 and 285a), an instrument that was in vogue at the time, probably because the Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria played the instrument as an amateur in the capital of the Palatinate. A graphological study shows that the quartet K285b was likely conceived in 1786-87 in Vienna... These works hold a special place in Anna Besson's heart as they were part of the program for one of her very first concerts on tour at the age of fifteen... She wanted to include Hoffmeister's arrangement of the sonata K311 "for the beauty of its central movement and the extreme delicacy with which the editor, a great friend of Mozart, took hold of both hands of the keyboard to gracefully redistribute them between the flute and the strings."
