Since its creation in June 1821, Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber enjoyed considerable success, making it one of the models of German Romantic opera. According to a tradition dating back to Mozart's time, still very much alive at that time, the work or some excerpts benefited from numerous transcriptions. The most important was that made by Karl Flachs, apparently as early as 1822, published in 1825.
