Purcell: Music for a while

Description

Throughout his career, Alfred Deller tirelessly championed Elizabethan lute songs and Purcell. This recital anthology was recorded just three months before his death in Bologna on 16 July 1979. Some of the best-known songs – such as "Fairest Isle" – were originally conceived for soprano voice and the stage, but one cannot imagine Purcell objecting to Deller taking the music out of its original context and adapting it as needed, making it his own with his extraordinary subtlety.
