{"product_id":"will-guthrie_people-pleaser-part-2-vinyl_2021_lad","title":"PEOPLE PLEASER Part 2 (vinyl)","description":"An adopted Nantes resident, Australian Will Guthrie is an understated star on the international free, experimental, and improvised music scene; over the past fifteen years, he has developed an open and personal approach to drums and percussion, skillfully blurring the lines between his brilliant jazz training, his passion for traditional music, and his inexhaustible interest in experimental and noise creation, with a pronounced taste for a physical and raw approach to sound. With hundreds of performances and some fifty albums to his credit, the Australian regularly shares his vibrant art solo or alongside the cream of improvisation; from Oren Ambarchi to Roscoe Mitchell, passing through Jérôme Noetinger, Anthony Pateras, David Maranha, Ava Mendoza, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Keith Rowe, or Mark Fell. In recent months, Guthrie has played with Tunisian singer Ghassen Chiba, toured as part of \"All Around,\" a performance with Danish dancer and choreographer Mette Ingvarsten, and founded the Nist-Nah ensemble, a gamelan orchestra, with eight other percussionists, an album of which was released by Black Truffle. He also found time to finalize a second volume of \"People Pleaser,\" a discographic act somewhere between a review, a parenthetical, and a musical UFO.A singular exercise in Guthrie's discography, \"People Pleaser,\" a series initiated in 2017, sees the Australian put down his drumsticks and don a producer's hat for a result offering a resolutely unique perspective of\/on his work with a very personal dimension. On the first volume, the cover, designed by Stephen O'Malley, sets the tone by reinterpreting the flamboyant visual of Cecil Taylor's \"Unit Structures\" album. The portrait of the free jazz pianist has been replaced by Guthrie's identity photos. The result is a subversion in a rather \"Pop\" aesthetic, whose musical content functions in a fairly similar way. Four years later, the nuances of the cover are a little darker, and Guthrie hasn't aged a day in his new identity photo. The twelve tracks of this second \"People Pleaser\" combine and arrange field recordings, haunting loops, distortions, musical quotes sampled from cherished records, moments captured during travels, melodies and songs caught from Asian TV programs, voices from a family reunion or an obscure exotic ritual... Guthrie could wander through his hard drive for hours as one looks at a photo album, but he chose to build tracks based on this very personal sound material, somewhat like a mixtape, with particular care given to how the sounds articulate, overlap, and collide. He thus invites his heroes and friends to join him in skillfully crafted and finely edited imaginary jams. The first to enjoy this \"People Pleaser\" is undoubtedly its author, as some of his discoveries are delightfully playful; one is carried away into an addictive, high-speed sonic patchwork where a Balinese Squarepusher is propelled via a defective cathode ray tube into a temple celebrating the happy marriage of saxophone and gong before this too-short respite is interrupted by a sustained hip-hop beat. The multiplicity and variety of sources give the whole a very pop format, and the way Guthrie combines sounds, textures, rhythms, and vocal elements quickly takes on a narrative dimension, positioning this exercise between hip-hop and a very personal plunderphonic, evoking both J Dilla or RZA and the irreverent inventiveness of People Like Us or Wobbly. Will Guthrie has never been so well surrounded on a solo album; he lists on the cover the friends, heroes, family members, and countries that have inspired him and to whom he pays homage\/collage on this new record; an aesthetically distinct exercise in his discography, both infinitely personal and self-centered and resolutely oriented towards what (and whom) drives him, the aptly named \"People Pleaser\" reveals the DNA of the Australian's music and is meant to be listened to on repeat.« Listening to Will Guthrie play solo is an experience close to dizziness, catharsis, almost a moment of truth, in any case a revelation. » --- LE MONDE ---.« The multiplicity and variety of sources give the whole a very pop format.
