wilhelm-berger_piano-solo-works_2018
Piano Solo Works
Wilhelm Berger, virtuoso pianist and composer of late Romanticism
Berger's piano pieces are a great technical challenge for their performers. This is due to the fact that he was himself an exceptional pianist although he never considered technical difficulties as an end in themselves. While he was a student, he noted a player about another pianist: “Certainly abilities but where is the soul?”; and he remained more sensitive to the musical message and the conviction of its performer.
Berger can be seen without any hesitation as one of the last German representatives of late Romanticism. He pushed the boundaries of his ideas beyond the final hours of this post-Romanticism.
At the same time, far from focusing on technical effects, Berger was continually in search of beauty through his music. He possessed impeccable mastery of counterpoint and sometimes slipped complex fugues into the heart of his pieces. In this sense, he followed the tradition of a Bach, a Beethoven, a Schumann, and a Brahms. He was also a great admirer of Wagner, the man and his works.
A very characteristic feature of his piano music is that it is not at all based on a purely pianistic approach. Indeed, his polyphonic work, his maximal use of the keyboard's range draws its origins from a symphonic form and from a desire to approach orchestral timbres. It is also important to note that Berger composed choral works. His sense of lyricism led him to write a significant number of melodies and works for choir.
Certainly, this is heard in his piano music. Each voice, each melodic line sometimes finds the accents of a church choir, a voice emerging from an opera, or an exalted duo. All of this creates a particularly rich polyphonic fabric. The way Berger brings together all these approaches shows that his piano music not only occupies a unique place in the history of music but also considerably enriches the pianistic repertoire of the late 19th century.
