90 in November, the debut album from Texas quintet Why Bonnie, arrives with a bang, in an explosion of distorted guitar and a screech of feedback. It’s a dynamic introduction to a rawer, indie sound from a band that has matured from bedroom dream-pop to sophisticated rock, the evolution of their sound mirroring the journey undertaken by songwriter Blair Howerton on this collection of highly expressive songs. The songs on 90 in November were mostly written in Brooklyn, New York, where Blair moved after leaving Austin in 2019. Already in the midst of a major life change, her feeling of being between two worlds intensified when lockdown hit and she found herself, like so many others, stuck in her apartment—light years away from the wide-open spaces of Texas. It was in this environment that she began to write songs that analyze her complex and contradictory emotions, building a new home while trying to make sense of the one she left behind.
