Description

WEN releases his EP Carve + Gaze via Big Dada, continuing in the vein of his dark productions of EPs and singles released on labels like Tectonic, Keysound, and Soundman Chronicles. Partially inspired by "Glaze Theory," a concept that explains how we digest art and the knowledge needed to build a creative process, the core of the EP focuses on the consumption and critique of one's own work. Carve + Gaze brings together tracks that came to WEN while spending long, rainy nights driving through his hometown, Kent. The artist developed an obsession with the way rain fell on his window and managed to transcribe it into his sound and visual universe. These nocturnal downpours became like the coating for the four tracks on this EP. Pieces like 'Femme II', featuring a cleverly placed sample by former Section Boyz member Reeko Squeeze, paints a darker, more anxiety-inducing backdrop penetrated by an imperceptible and menacing female voice. In this EP, WEN sculpts sounds. Carve + Grave is a homogeneous and detailed masterpiece that sounds like an allegory where each track is a symbol and leads to something larger; it almost holds a hidden meaning that the listener must discover for themselves.
