The suspended harp of Babel

Description

The Suspended Harp of Babel (La harpe suspendue de Babel) offers interpretations that are particularly representative of the qualities of choral music by the Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962). Kreek's pieces, subtly incorporating quotes from psalms and folk hymns, are presented here alongside fantasies and instrumental interludes specifically composed for this recording by Marco Ambrosini. Under the direction of Jaan-Eike Tulve, the choir Vox Clamantis - which has previously been heard on ECM in recordings dedicated to the works of Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür, or Helena Tulve as well as in Gregorian chant albums - proves to be the ideal interpreter of this music bridging the old and the new. The Suspended Harp of Babel was recorded in the Church of the Transfiguration in Tallinn in August 2018.
