Miraculously, the magnificent grand organ of Notre-Dame de Paris survived the catastrophic fire of the cathedral in April 2019. Its 8,000 pipes were affected by water from fire hoses and lead dust, but, fully cleaned and restored, it was put back into service for the historic reopening of the cathedral in December 2024. This new recording by Vincent Dubois, one of the four titular organists of Notre-Dame, showcases the technical, musical, and expressive palette of this monumental instrument built by the great Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The program also honors the organ's legacy: The former titular organists of Notre-Dame are represented by pieces by Louis Vierne, Pierre Cochereau, and Claude Balbastre, as well as an arrangement (of the dazzling Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov) by Léonce de Saint-Martin; Dubois himself transcribed three movements from Ravel's suite Le Tombeau de Couperin, as well as works by César Franck and Charles Widor. The program concludes with the sublime JS Bach, presenting a work that defines the organ as an instrument, the imperious Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
