After leaving C. Tjader's Latin-jazz ensemble, American pianist Vince Guaraldi launched his solo career in 1962 with 'Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus.' Inspired by the soundtrack of Marcel Camus's cult film 'Black Orpheus,' the pianist, accompanied by drummer Colin Bailey and bassist Monty Budwig, reinterpreted a large portion of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa's original soundtrack.
Against all odds, "Cast Your Face to the Wind," an original composition included on the B-side, achieved spectacular success. The instrumental won the Grammy Award for Best Original Jazz Composition in 1963 and also caught the attention of the producers of the animated series 'Peanuts.'
