Description

Véronique Vincent (singer of Honeymoon Killers) and Marc Hollander (founder of Crammed Discs) are finally releasing their pioneering avant-pop album, recorded and unfinished in… 1980-83. This record was never completed. Intended to be the third album by Aksak Maboul (the cult band formed by Marc Hollander), it gradually transformed into a strange object, intimately blending the dreamy voice and deceptively light lyrics of Véronique Vincent (the iconic singer of Honeymoon Killers) with Hollander's constructed musical wanderings. A colorful electronic French pop infused with all-over musical excursions. But the project – too pop to be experimental? too eccentric to be pop, at least in 1983? – was put aside, and life went on. When they were "rediscovered" three decades later, it turned out that these songs had, if anything, aged well, and that this album was undoubtedly more understandable in 2014 than it had been back then... So here is this "Ex-Futur Album," assembled from demos and flat mixes (sometimes extracted from audio cassettes), delivered to the public in its original, unfinished candor, with a slight delay of 30 years. Besides its extraordinary history, besides the charm of its melodies and lyrics, this "Ex-Futur Album" is full of elements (including a wealth of Aksak Maboul-style instrumental passages) that give it a retro-futuristic, timeless, and innovative feel, foreshadowing certain hybrid trends that emerged later, with its mixed flavors, pop and proto-techno, African and Middle Eastern, jazz, dub, etc. Recorded in collaboration with Vincent Kenis, the album contains 10 tracks, plus 6 bonuses (including unbridled live versions of some songs), three of which will be available exclusively via the download code included in the CD and vinyl formats. The single "Chez les Aborigènes" will be accompanied by a new remix by the Norwegian electronic music duo E?SY & C.O.U., from the Nordic underground skwee scene (they are the main – and sole – representatives of the sub-style called Oriental Skwee...)
