Released just over a year after their previous opus, Fragile World marks a decisive turning point in the band's tone and energy. Recorded live to tape in New Zealand by Paddy Hill, and produced by Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, The Chills, Folk Bitch Trio), Fragile World reveals The Veils in an urgent and instinctive vein. The album's title is both a reflection of the current era - a period when many institutions seem to be crumbling before our eyes - and a metaphor for the act of creation itself. The process of musical creation, Andrews emphasizes, is a delicate and fragile endeavor where thousands of small decisions gradually combine to form a cohesive whole. "We went into the studio with a lot of songs, but a very vague idea of the arrangements and instrumentation. It was really exciting not knowing what this album would sound like and having only a few weeks to find out. Tom and I play most of the instruments, with Joseph McCallum stepping in from time to time. It was very instinctive, quite intense, and sometimes even anxiety-inducing - but a good kind of anxiety, nothing like reality." With its immediacy, intensity, and emotional clarity, Fragile World stands as one of The Veils' most striking albums to date.
