Passion Rules

Description

Formed in 1988 by former Martyr vocalist Gerard Vangouw, Vangouw established itself on the Dutch heavy metal scene with a clear orientation toward melodic AOR and hard rock. After recording its first demos, including "A Girl Like You" and "Simoni," the band gained national recognition by winning the Dutch television contest Veronica Star Search in December 1988. This victory quickly transformed what was initially a studio project into a fully active band. Between 1989 and 1991, Vangouw built a solid live reputation in the Netherlands, recorded several demos, and signed with Red Bullet Records, working with renowned producer John Sonneveld. Despite promising recordings, including a notable cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," the collaboration ended before the release of a full album due to artistic differences. Faced with industry setbacks and shifting musical trends, the band disbanded in 1992, with Gerard pursuing a legal career. Nearly 25 years later, Vangouw's recordings were finally compiled and released in 2010 under the title Passion Rules, revealing a refined blend of emotional melodies, expressive vocals, and late-80s melodic rock aesthetics. In 2026, the album was reissued by Bad Reputation, with additional artwork and bonus tracks, cementing its status as a cult AOR album.
