Nearly five years after their last release, Ulrika Spacek return from self-imposed exile with a third album, "Compact Trauma." A collection of songs that functions as a manifesto on our current collective condition. With a title like this, it would be tempting to interpret the album solely through the lens of global events of recent years, yet these ten tracks are rooted much further back in time and loaded with their own stories. The extended break enforced by a myriad of lockdowns separated the band, but above all, it gave the five members time to reflect and gain perspective on what had already been recorded. When the shutters reopened and light streamed in, they found themselves confronted with "Compact Trauma." What they discovered was a record that seemed to anticipate the shared pain of a global pandemic. Even if the specifics were different, the themes were strangely similar, dealing with existential panic, displacement, drug dependency, and a lack of self-confidence. These very personal songs suddenly took on a broader meaning, fitting into a larger narrative.
