Just a few years ago, Merril Garbus recorded her demos using a simple dictaphone and arranged them via Garageband. Her first album, Bird-Brains, released in 2009 on 4AD, was the result of this hard work.
Around the same time, she recruited bassist Nate Brenner, and together they formed Tune-Yards, whose live performances immediately made an impression. Their first studio album, W H O K I L L, was released in 2011, and in it Merril tackled more serious social issues, including everyday violence in California. A long world tour followed, cementing their reputation as an unmissable sensation. After months of much-deserved rest, Merril returned to the studio to record this new album titled Nikki Nack.
For the first time, she decided to bring in producers to assist her on certain tracks. This is how Malay (Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys, Big Boi) and John Hill (Rihanna, Shakira, M.I.A.) contributed to the album's production, which nevertheless remained under the control of Tune-Yards, who over the years have managed to create their own unique identity. A clever blend of diverse influences, whether African or more urban. Merril spent a few months in Haiti before conceiving this album, where she wrote many tracks and was naturally influenced by local music. This influence can be heard on tracks like Water Fountain and Left Behind. She also flirts with R&B on the essential Wait A Minute, produced by Malay, but Nikki Nack seems destined to brilliantly continue writing the band's history.
