The legendary artist and producer Tricky today announces the release of his new album, Different When It's Silent, available on July 17, 2026 via False Idols. The fifteenth studio album and first solo opus in six years, Different When It's Silent is a direct and incisive record that reconnects with the very particular sonic language that has characterized Tricky's work since his groundbreaking debut album, Maxinquaye, released in 1995. After a first broadcast by Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music, the first single, "Out Of Place," arrives in apotheosis. A duet with his longtime collaborator Marta, the track combines Marta's understated voice with Tricky's raw, almost punk energy. This contrast creates a striking finale that captures the raw intensity of the album. Originally written for Marta's album, "Out Of Place" was ultimately reintegrated by Tricky into Different When It's Silent. Different When It's Silent follows a period of prolific activity. Since Fall to Pieces in 2020, Tricky has released tracks under various pseudonyms, including the collaborative project Lonely Guest, the Fifteen Days project with producer Mike Theis under the name Theis Thaws, and the joint album Out The Way with Marta last year, all released on his own label, False Idols. Yet, returning to an album under his own name took on an entirely different dimension. "For me, it was just a side project," he explains. But after listening to the tracks, his manager, Alan McGee, felt they clearly belonged on a Tricky album. Recorded between Tricky's home in France and sessions in Bristol, the album draws its inspiration from the music scene that shaped him. The voice of Bristolian singer Mitch Sanders, whose soul falsetto permeates much of the album, occupies a central place. Their chemistry is based on a shared musical background and an instinctive alchemy that shines through in their performances. Across fourteen tracks, Tricky blends minimalist blues, dark electro, saturated guitars, and incisive hip-hop rhythms to create a sound that is both stripped-down and expansive. The album navigates fluidly between styles while maintaining that relentless experimentation that has characterized his work for over thirty years.
