Shubunkin Over Rochdale College Bank

Description

Recorded by Tractor in 1971 in Rochdale and released on LP in 1972, Shubunkin was sampled by Broken Bells (Danger Mouse and James Mercer of The Shins) for their track To Anyone a Ghost. Julian Cope described Shubunkin as "the sound of a soul rising to heaven" and considered it essential in his collection. Reissued in 2019, the album protested against the demolition of the Seven Sisters/College Bank towers, where band members and their families lived in the 1970s. Many tracks were composed there before being recorded locally. Written by Jim Milne and Steve Clayton, the album now opens with Shubunkin, as Julian Cope envisioned.
