«I discovered rebetiko in 1983 during a trip to Turkey where I had come to present my film Les Princes. It is a music that developed in the underbelly of Athens and Thessaloniki, then in the islands, when the Greeks were expelled from Turkey by Atatürk. There is never anger in this music, rather revolt and melancholy like in all the music I love. It is music for the unloved, but for people proud to be who they are. A subversive music. In rebetiko, the songs have healing lyrics. (…) Leaving one’s country can also bring something positive: new horizons, a way of living together… What I like about rebetiko is this blend of East and West. After "Geronimo," which admirably translated the tensions between traditional cultures and urban identities, Tony Gatlif returns in 2017 with "Djam," a masterful soundtrack dedicated to rebetiko. The humanity of this popular Greek music, born from exile, migration, and mixing, lies in the fact that it originates from this region connecting Europe and Asia, a crossroads of civilizations and crises (economic and migratory), and so to speak, the center of the world. Tony Gatlif is the filmmaker of rhythm and freedom, music is a central element in his filmography (two Césars for Gadjo Dilo, Vengo). The music of "Djam" accompanies the initiatory journey of the heroine, from Istanbul to Mytilene, delivering in turn spirals of intoxication, emotion, and jubilant frenzy.
