Arvo Pärt: the symphonies

This record features all new versions of the four symphonies by Arvo Pärt, recorded by the NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic under the direction of Tõnu Kaljuste, one of Pärt's most faithful companions. As the great Estonian composer noted, each of these symphonies is a world unto itself. Presented here in chronological order of their conception, they reflect the musical and spiritual journey that Pärt has undergone throughout his career, and the very different ways in which he has exercised his art. Forty-five years separate Symphony No. 1 ("Polyphonic") written in 1963 when he was still a student of Heino Eller, from Symphony No. 4 ("Los Angeles") composed in 2008, by which time he had already become the most performed contemporary composer in the world.
