And indeed: beyond the simple pleasures of soukouss, or the rumba guitar riff that spins like a carousel past its technical inspection, it is the sheer luxuriance of the arrangements that strikes you. The almighty orchestra puts everyone in their place with an uncompartmentalized style and a beautiful spirit of synthesis. There's straight-up rhythm, syncopation, 808s, and the typical basslines that make your knees lift... but it’s never a jumble: in this global sound, there is a vision. Bikaye, rebranded BIKAY3 for the occasion, revels in his distinctive voice, whose wild vibrato has matured like a family plum. He uses it — notably in \"Zela\" and \"Balobi\" — with a showy flamboyance reminiscent of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Bikaye loves to play with singing; his pleasure in language extends to pure storytelling. Thus, \"La forêt et les dieux\" is a French-language excursion into the bush, moving on a mossy carpet of synths and percussion to tell us, in a spoken-wet voice, a brilliant cosmogony that’s mind-blowing. Guillaume Loizillon's synth and Nicole Mitchell's flute complete \"Akei,\" a stroll through Byrne\/Eno's \"bush of ghosts,\" where Lingala or Kikongo chatter. \"It's a bomb,\" a bastard rumba, closes the ball with a rimshot that claps like a fresh hand on willing skin.
