Tomberlin is Sarah Beth Tomberlin, the child of a pastor born in Florida, raised in rural Illinois. She wrote the majority of her debut album At Weddings (2018) while living at home. After leaving her home and the church, she had a day job and continued writing songs. She posted some of these songs on Bandcamp, which led to her signing a contract with Saddle Creek. Everything happened quickly: less than a year after her first live show, she performed on Jimmy Kimmel and she ended up moving to L.A., where she wrote Projections (2020), her EP that follows At Weddings.It was in Brooklyn, where she is now based, that her new album "I don’t know who needs to hear this" was recorded, at Figure 8 Studios over two weeks, with producer and engineer Phil Weinrobe.Here, "The theme of the record is to examine, to delineate space, to make an altar for feelings." Holding space: Tomberlin's songs do this literally, by making space audible.
