MODAL, TIMELESS, AND RADICAL
"A splendor, a blessing, an offering." --- LE FIGARO ---.
"One is swept away by such mutual respect, such quality of reciprocal listening, such a surge of intelligence and intertwined emotion." --- LE MONDE ---.
"Of course, it is Thierry Robin's strings that remain at the heart of these wanderings. Subtle, luxuriant, warm, they constantly travel in search of new stops." --- A. Berthod, TÉLÉRAMA ---.
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser and poet, Titi Robin plays guitar, bouzouq and oud, and is the exclusive author of his many projects, regularly blending literature and music. He records his repertoire in Europe, as well as in India, Turkey, and Morocco. His music, influenced by European, Gypsy, and Oriental styles, travels the world and captivates with its originality. His quest for harmony between cultures from different horizons makes him a true "traveling musician". His music has notably been built through his admiration for the flamenco cantaor Camaron de la Isla and the Iraqi oud master, Munir Bachir.
Titi Robin has toured the world, from the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles to the Tata Theater in Mumbai, and has regularly collaborated with artists such as the Indian Rajasthani dancer Gulabi Sapera and the Lahore qawwal Faiz Ali Faiz.
His new album *Quatuor Le Sable et l'Écume*. "Grains of sand and foam have drawn on its tender skin the map of a world on fire."
These are words that Titi Robin expresses in a poem he wrote in reaction to the cultural shocks the Mediterranean world is experiencing. A feeling that inspired a new repertoire whose key word is sharing. Here, he invites a new instrumental formation of soloists - tenor saxophone, clarinet, English horn, double bass, percussion - to compose new pieces where tradition is always present, a warm album.
"The musical gathering that this quartet constitutes aims for me at a form of ideal confident abandon between soloists who, through their backgrounds and their aesthetic approaches to improvised discourse, have made their mark in a vast contemporary creative world lovingly embracing the modernities of the Mediterranean universe, Eastern Europe, and the rich schools of the South that saw us grow up. This aesthetic maturity nourishes exchange and invention, introspection, sharing, embodied instrumental timbres, through modal cultures and polyrhythms that are our language.
I am delighted to invite the virtuoso vibration of the skins struck by Ze Luis Nascimento, the generous warmth and woody sound of Chris Jennings' beautiful double bass, the limitless sophistication of the winds of the subtle blower Renaud-Gabriel Pion to this musical encounter, and I thank these three loyal friends for wanting to play the game of artistic reunion again. Our worlds and lives, our dreams and struggles, there is so much to say that only free and radical music can express." --- Titi Robin ---.
With three other outstanding soloists, Titi Robin weaves a common song that blurs the line between improvisations and modal compositions: a new way to express the truth of his inner sky most vividly and accurately. Titi Robin presents a new instrumental formation here, centered around an original repertoire he composed for the occasion, of a radically modal and polyrhythmic culture. The four musicians all being seasoned improvising soloists, the show will feature live music where the artistic risk-taking will be commensurate with the aesthetic stakes.
