When he was still part of The Charlatans, Tim Burgess’s inexhaustible energy drove the band through thirteen albums. His solo journey is no less extraordinary, with his fifth solo release to date, ‘I Love The New Sky’, being very promising. The album beautifully blends songs that easily touch listeners with their everyday themes, and others that evoke universal experiences – love and anger, loss and belonging – all linked by elaborate yet natural arrangements, and an obvious ease and expertise in melody. ‘I Love The New Sky’ sits somewhere between Paul McCartney’s ‘RAM’ and ‘Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)’, which speaks volumes about its musicality and quality. Stylistically, however, the album covers a wide range, from the gospel and rockabilly of ‘I Love The Sky’ to the sophistication of ‘Sweetheart Mercury’, passing through ‘Sweet Old Memory’ which recalls Nilsson, and the languor of ‘Undertow’ that Burgess describes as a lovely mood changer, influenced by 10cc.
