Thurston Moore
The Best Day
Former Sonic Youth mastermind, Thurston Moore, is back four years after the release of his first album on Matador, Demolished Thoughts. The Best Day was recorded with Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) on drums, James Sedwards (Nought) on guitar, and Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass.
This album is a mix of electric compositions and acoustic ballads, but Sonic Youth fans will not be disappointed. It features a deluge of noisy guitars, like on "Detonation," and the over 8-minute-long eponymous opening track could very well have been on the band's last album.
The ambition here is more melodic and effective, like the haunting post-rock chant "Forevermore." Thurston Moore delivers an album that bridges the gap between the legacy of American music and his effects-laden melodies.
