Moonlight Concessions is a return to the roots, a comeback of Throwing Muses to their best offbeat esotericism, thanks to Kristin's sharp sketches and their abrasive musical arrangements. The album follows the acclaimed "Sun Racket" from 2020, a heady collection filled with hard and tender stories, spiced with surreal imagery. Produced by Kristin Hersh at Steve Rizzo's Stable Sound Studio in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, 'Moonlight Concessions' is a collection of snippets from everyday life - think of Raymond Carver's Short Cuts, overheard conversations, and told stories, all stitched together to illustrate the times as they slowly mature, fully spiced with the liveliness and vigor of the original Muses. "Drugstore Drastic" is built on a fast acoustic rhythm with an undercurrent of guitar melody; it's a story unfolding on the social consciousness of a blurred subconscious. "Summer Of Love" began with a bet with a guy for a dollar revolving around the idea that seasons do not change us. The album's opening is baroque and haunting. The strings of "Libretto" balance the acoustic ambiance, the warm and cold of nostalgia at the very heart of the album, a thematic engine filled with warmth in a haven of peace lubricated by tequila. Written in the different environments of the southern Gulf Coast and Southern California, "Moonlight Concessions" draws from the star clusters that illuminate both, generating optimism and hope to varying degrees. Hersh explains: "In New Orleans, the stars are a bluish-green because the city is below sea level and lit by the swamps. But on Moonlight Beach, they shine with a cold white. All these songs were written in these two bright places, which helped our sound technique find itself."
