Releasing a new album after a global pandemic is the kind of move we’ve come to expect from Thrice for twenty years. With "Horizons/East," Dustin Kensrue and his bandmates sincerely and courageously address the fragile and awkward arrangements that constitute civilization, while inviting us to better understand our own lives. Without sacrificing any of the energy and power of their previous albums, they offer us a deeply meditative work that serves as a musical lesson in daily vigilance. Since forming Thrice with guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge in 1998, Kensrue has never shied away from an intellectual challenge. The mood is set from the first synth track, "Color of the Sky," which sounds perfect for the end credits of the final season of Stranger Things. Imagine Flying Lotus giving way to Elbow and placing the listener in a new dimension. Self-recorded, "Horizons/East" conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility.
