His poems reflect industrialized America, painting a raw and powerful portrait of it. With a musician's defiance, he disregarded the conventions of the time regarding form and structure. A talented guitarist and singer, Sandburg compiled American folk tunes. It was this advanced musicality, found in his poetry, that captivated Kirk Knuffke and led to three of Sandburg’s poems appearing on the recording. Josefine Cronholm was fascinated by the fate of Clara Mathilda, Sandburg's mother: her solitary journey across the Atlantic, and the dreams of Sweden she left behind. This fascination inspired the music and lyrics she contributed to the project. The poem for the song Near the Pond, which gives the album its title, is by 9-year-old Shunn Theingi.
