New album "Crooked Wing," co-produced by Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis) Feat. Caroline Polachek
These New Puritans is the musical project of twins Jack and George Barnett. Crooked Wing is the duo's fifth studio album, following 2019's Inside The Rose. It was produced by Jack and his long-time collaborator Graham Sutton, a founding member of the cult British band Bark Psychosis.
Crooked Wing is an album dotted with dichotomies. The lyrics explore tensions between human/machine, sky/earth, earth/underground, innocence/corruption, life/death, and restraint/ecstasy. These oppositions also permeate the instrumentation, notably through the organ, present on almost every track and described by Jack as "the instrument of love and fear... of beauty and violence."
The result is These New Puritans' most ambitious work to date – both visceral and immediate, yet also teeming with singularities that reveal themselves with each new listen.
True to form, These New Puritans have assembled an impressive ensemble of musicians from British orchestras to perform the lush arrangements that punctuate the album. The album also features vocal contributions from the Southend Boys Choir as well as Caroline Polachek, a long-time friend of the band. Caroline is particularly featured on the track "Industrial Love Song" and also provides backing vocals on "A Season In Hell" and "Wild Fields (I Don't Want To)."
