Lost On The Hill (03:51)
The Spitters was formed in 2013 in a high school in Toulon, France, born from the friendship and creative collaboration between Maxime Richard (guitar, vocals) and Dorian Lahais-Cazalé (drums, vocals). The young musical duo experimented with various styles, spanning from The Beatles and The Pixies to Jay Reatard, inadvertently laying the foundation for the band's identity. Over the next 10 years, The Spitters (now joined by Barny on guitar and Sloog on bass) released several albums (2014, 2016, 2018, 2022) and toured extensively across Europe, playing at prestigious festivals such as Hellfest Open Air, Pointu Festival, Cosmic Trip, and TINALS. They gradually established themselves as a key act in the French garage
punk scene.
A meeting with the British band Bad Nerves at a concert in Paris in October 2023 marked a turning point for the band. While in the process of composing, the Toulon natives decided to enlist Mike Curtis (responsible for Bad Nerves' recordings) to mix their fifth album. Influenced by both '77 punk (The Damned, Buzzcocks) and more contemporary references (Stiff Richards, Wine Lips), "Fake Brutal" is primarily the culmination of a perpetual quest for sonic and melodic efficiency, which began a decade earlier. Thirteen tracks with irresistible riffs, delivered without any drop in pace or dead air, and perfected by the work of Mike Curtis, assisted by Christian Wright from Abbey Road Studios for mastering.
The quartet also uses this new album to try and subvert the now classic expectation of immediate fun, to which they had accustomed their audience. Fake Brutal addresses more introspective and complex themes than in the past, such as the superficiality of social interactions and the trivialization of violence in a society losing its bearings. A critical look at a world in crisis, seeking a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
Recorded by Fabien Camoin, mixed by Mike Curtis (Bad Nerves) and mastered by Christian Wright of Abbey Road (Fontaines D.C., Blur, Franz Ferdinand…).
For fans of: Jay Reatard, The Hives, Bad Nerves, Wine Lips…
