Wax-Work Echoes

Description

Initially conceived as a patchwork of unreleased tracks and live recordings from their 1995 American tour, Wax-Work Echoes ultimately became a full-fledged album. The band's first release to officially include Tim Goss in its core lineup, this record sees The Shadow Ring refine its formula: deadpan spoken word, detuned guitars, absurd sound collages, and poetic-animalistic visions. Released in 1996 on Corpus Hermeticum (Bruce Russell's label), the album blends homegrown mythological tales with external contributions, such as that of Richard Youngs. It also features a fragment of "Mambo Twist" from a cassette sent by Alasdair Willis. Composed alongside long rehearsal sessions for the "Rose Watson Tour," Wax-Work Echoes captures the raw, unstable energy of the trio at the height of its strangeness. Never reissued until now, the album joins the series of reissues led by Blank Forms, which traces the work of this cult band from the British underground. An essential milestone for understanding the bewildering yet fascinating trajectory of The Shadow Ring.
