The Serfs and its members' side projects (The Drin, Crime of Passing, Motorbike) are undeniably at the center of Cincinnati's burgeoning neu-underground scene. Having released records on Detriti (Berlin) and DREAM Records (Seattle), the group has now turned to Trouble In Mind for their third and best album to date. Half Eaten By Dogs puts a decidedly Midwestern spin on the modernist twitch of avant-garde groups like Total Control or Cold Beat, and the post-industrial grime of Skinny Puppy, Dark Day, This Heat, or Factrix. It is a mixture of tenebrous drums, stylized synths, and guitar, sometimes with wary paranoia, sometimes with an air of defiance and exuberance (and occasionally with harmonica, saxophone, or flute). There are songs for dancing and songs to listen to during a storm or while freely cruising the world's roads. For fans of Total Control, Cold Beat, Dark Day, Factrix, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, This Heat, New Order, Skinny Puppy, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Sextile, Suicide.
