Garlic & Onions

Description

The new album «Garlic & Onions» evokes with nostalgia life in the English countryside of yesteryear and focuses on culinary pleasure and delights. It includes airs, dances, and ballads from the British Renaissance with a variety of pieces from publishers John (1623-1686) and Henry Playford (1657 - c. 1707) as well as composers Thomas Campion (1567-1620) and Tobias Hume (c. 1569-1645) and historical folk music from the British Isles in the ensemble's own arrangements. Inspired by John Playford's famous collection «The English Dancing Master», which also gave the ensemble its name, the album contains pleasant traditional tunes such as «Nutmegs and Ginger», «Lumps of Pudding» and «The Cooks Humour», which thematize culinary pleasures with wit and ambiguity. Songs like «The Merry Merry Milkmaids» evoke images of joyful rural escapades, while «Tobacco» by Tobias Hume is a tribute to the pleasures of exoticism of the time. The song «I will give my love an apple» addresses the power of love through the hidden symbolism of the fruit, while «Glory of the Kitchen» praises the importance of good cooking. The meticulous research of the Playfords and their passion for unusual music are reflected in every track.
