AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL THROUGH THE APPALACHIANS IN 15 TRACKS AT THE CROSSROADS BETWEEN ROCKABILLY AND IRISH FOLKLORE
The new album by Pine Hill Haints, The Song Companion of a Lonestar Cowboy, takes us through the colorful trails of America and the Appalachians. This fifteen-song journey begins with "Fall Asleep" and "Back to Alabama," a fiery mix of rockabilly and Irish folklore. Then, remarkable tracks follow one another, such as "Pretty Thing" with a Bo Diddley-esque groove, the cover of the traditional song "John Henry" with violins and hammered percussion, or the catchy "Lone Star Kid" with its pop concertina and Cajun flavor. There are excursions into Sun Records-style country with "Midnight Mayor" and "Louise" and into swamp blues with the raw vocals of "Wade in the Water" and "Downtown Blues," featuring J.D. Wilkes on harmonica. All the while, Jamie Barrier's powerful tenor voice sounds familiar and friendly, with deep echoes ranging from John Lee Hooker to Buddy Holly, via Johnny Cash. The band plays with a freedom born from thousands of concerts left behind them. It all seems deceptively simple, but anyone who plays music knows what that entails. The Pine Hill Haints do something very few roots bands can do: transcend influences and sculpt ancient sounds into soulful music for our time.
