In 2007, The Good, The Bad & The Queen – made up of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon (The Clash), Simon Tong (The Verve) and Tony Allen (Fela Kuti) – came to life and released a critically acclaimed eponymous album, a surprising and magical record, drawing inspiration from all over the world. Eleven years later, the four storytellers are back with "Merrie Land", produced by Tony Visconti and the band themselves. Made between London and Wales this year as the United Kingdom prepares to leave the European Union, this second album is a farewell letter full of questions, a series of observations and reflections on Great Britain in 2018. Even though more than ten years have passed since the release of the first record, the timing could not have been more opportune for a return: with "Merrie Land" the band continues to unravel optimism, disorientation and confusion, but in the atmosphere that reigns today. Drawing inspiration from their sparkling respective musical histories, the four companions deliver a brilliant, hybrid, post-modern and resolutely British record.
