THE IRISH GROUP RETURNS WITH A NEW ALBUM BLENDING TRADITIONAL, JAZZ, CLASSICAL, AND EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC. THE GLOAMING is at a true musical crossroads, blending melancholic tones of traditional Irish music with modern hues of jazz, contemporary classical, and experimental music. Rooted in traditional Irish music since their inception, violinists Martin Hayes and Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh and sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird are joined by New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) and Chicago-born guitarist Dennis Cahill. THE GLOAMING have found a way to merge and transform Irish traditions, and in the process redefine what Irish music can be. Their new album, 2, was recorded in December 2015 at Real World Studios, produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, Glen Hansard) and engineered and mixed by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne & St. Vincent, The National). Although Ireland is small, the variety and difference in styles among traditional musicians from different counties and parishes just a few kilometers apart is astonishing. The origins of the three Irish members of the band illustrate the power and colors of this ecosystem. Hayes hails from County Clare, where a slow, contemplative, and melancholic fiddle sound reigns among its musicians. A move to America sparked new inspirations, ranging from Arvo Pärt to Sigur Ros. Ó Raghallaigh, Hayes' fellow fiddler, was born in Dublin and draws inspiration from a minimalist experimental sound world. Ó Lionáird comes from West Cork, where Sean-nós singing - a cappella - is passed down from generation to generation. THE GLOAMING have performed on the most prestigious stages in their home country, with tickets selling out within days, sometimes just hours.
