BRUTALISM by THE DRUMS: more mature, raw and sharp pop! Brutalism is undoubtedly the best album of The Drums' ten-year career. It could be defined by growth, transformation, and questioning, yet it doesn't provide all the answers. "Brutalism" is a simplistic form of architecture, defined by raw concrete blocks. Brutalism is rooted in emotional rawness, but its layers are soft, complex, and warm, full of frivolous and exquisite pop songs that explode with sunlight and energy in the face of anxiety, loneliness, and crippling self-doubt. Even the fact that Brutalism feels intentional, focused, and effective is symbolic of how Pierce has prioritized his own health and well-being in his music-making. For the creation of this album, between his home in upstate New York and a studio in Stinson Beach, California, Pierce was more open than ever, maintaining remote control, working with others to produce and record the album. He brought in Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, Amen Dunes) to mix the album. It's also the first Drums album to feature a live drummer.
