Three Imaginary Boys

Description

Robert Smith doesn't like this album, nor its cover, nor its production, both of which are due to Chris Parry, nor the songs "Object," "It's Not You," "So What" (which help to understand why at one time his band was called "the Buzzcocks of the South") or "Foxy Lady," the strange cover of Jimi Hendrix, unrecognizable, sung by Dempsey, which he says he hates... This record, however, contains its share of wonderful songs, including the minimalist "10:15 Saturday Night," "Accuracy," "Grinding Halt," "Fire in Cairo," or the title track. A metronomic drum, a very simple bass and guitar, the lyrics and Smith's voice imbued with a typical monotonous sadness of a certain post-punk: a style that will not be found again in Cure, close to that of other bands of the time like Wire, Gang of Four, or, a few years later, the first R.E.M.
