In the early 1970s, Milan was a city brimming with creative energy. Its recording studios buzzed with activity day and night, populated by a tight-knit circle of jazz-trained session musicians who split their time between studio sessions and jam sessions in the city's clubs. Among them, Giancarlo Barigozzi, one of the most respected flutists and saxophonists on the scene, was just beginning to explore the enigmatic world of library music. The Barigozzi Group, formed with guitarist Sergio Farina and pianist Oscar Rocchi, became an iconic ensemble of Italian library music. Commissioned by publishers in Milan and Rome, they produced some of the most exquisite library music vinyl records of all time—records that effortlessly capture the spirit of the era. Among these, Woman's Colours remains arguably their most iconic and famous work. Originally released in 1974, this album is a cohesive and organic exploration of a single theme: a refined tribute to feminine beauty, with each track associating a specific color with a part of the body. Here, jazz-funk and jazz-rock intertwine, tinged with echoes of Afro-rhythms, exotica, and bossa nova. The result is a vibrant mosaic of fusion and lounge, where catchy basslines, fuzz guitars, a Fender Rhodes, and flutes with progressive accents create a soundscape that blends elegance and groove with equal precision.
