Nguyen's rich and airy voice - and the way she sings it, pushing out cries and dragging out words - recalls Cat Power, Fiona Apple, and Sinéad O'Connor. Yet, these comparisons suggest that Thao is an intense and passionate artist, while nothing could be further from the truth: her indie folk-pop with country accents is both playful and observant, with a hint of vulnerability. By playing against type and integrating a voice that seems made for melancholy into sunny and sweet songs, Nguyen carves out a fascinating territory among indie folk singers. On the first two tracks of *We Brave Bee Stings and All*, “Beat (Health, Life and Fire)” builds up the brass, ukulele, and piano to a climax that is both urgent and joyful, while “Bag of Hammers” is as disjointed as it is catchy. The interaction between Nguyen and her band, The Get Down Stay Down, is more intuitive than ever, and the richer sound of the album (thanks to producer Tucker Martine) highlights her more accomplished songs. In fact, most of the tracks are so joyful that it's fortunate Nguyen's voice is not fragile, as her music could then come off as sentimental instead of fresh and captivating. Fortunately, the Dixieland energy of “Feet Asleep” and the jazzy touches of “Geographic” prevent the album from sounding too predictable.
