Rising artist THALA draws strength from her vulnerability on her new EP "In Theory Depression," due out July 7th on Fire Records. Having previously carved a niche in hazy, lo-fi indie, this new release is undoubtedly home to her boldest compositions to date, turning these deeply personal sonic explorations into vibrant, 90s-influenced indie rock. "In Theory Depression" marks the artist's most introspective writing yet. While her incisive lyrics delve into unexpected depths, they are accompanied by consistently cinematic melodies. This evokes both the dazzling soundscapes of Mazzy Star, the bite of Liz Phair, and the punk influences of Juliana Hatfield: a bittersweet and feisty alternative pop. Born in Germany and raised in a Canadian household, THALA is now based in London. She spent a number of years in the Canary Islands, juggling odd jobs that quickly turned into a budding love affair with scuba diving. It was there, in the Canaries, that her music began to take root, inspired by the shimmering shoegaze of the early 90s – a measured and cerebral style of music, in osmosis with the hours spent underwater as a diving instructor. Back in Berlin, she embraced open-mic nights and began busking on the city streets. THALA has just completed a UK tour in support of Independent Venue Week, alongside other Fire Records artists: Amber Arcades and Hater, followed by her debut appearances at SXSW in Austin and The Great Escape in Brighton. Already supported by Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1, Wonderland Magazine, and Clash, "In Theory Depression" is her most creative work to date, where THALA reveals the most of herself.
