Cannonball Adderley described jazz singer Teri Thornton (1934-2000) as “the greatest voice since Ella Fitzgerald.” Ella herself cited Teri as her favorite singer in a 1963 interview with Down Beat magazine. Although a favorite among musicians and critics in the 1960s, Thornton remains an obscure figure today. On Lullaby of the Leaves (aka Devil May Care), her debut album and arguably her best, Teri is accompanied by an impressive band including Clark Terry, Freddie Green, Earl Warren, and Wynton Kelly.
