Detlef Heusinger is one of the most influential voices in contemporary music. A composer, conductor, and long-time director of the SWR Experimental Studio, he has significantly enriched the fusion between acoustic instruments and live electronics. His music transcends boundaries — between sound and image, structure and emotion, thought and feeling. The new release on NEOS brings together three major works that perfectly illustrate Heusinger's interdisciplinary approach. « Abzweige » (2013/14) is a "musical journey through a fairy-tale forest" — but this forest is not a romantic refuge; it is rather a place of ambivalence. Electronic textures, shimmering soundscapes, and distorted ensemble colors open up a world where beauty and threat, intimacy and distance merge. Live electronics fuse the instrumental sounds into a living organism of light, space, and resonance. With « Ode - Au fil du temps » (2021/22), Heusinger created a spectacular work for the Karlsruhe Palace Light Festival: an audiovisual journey through the intellectual and sonic history of Europe. Twelve synthesizers, a children's choir, and audio recordings unfold a multifaceted panorama from antiquity to the digital age. Beethoven, Schiller, and European ideals parade by, reinvented as vibrant electronic energy, mixed with the resonances of the harpsichord, vocoded voices, and techno rhythms. A tribute to "Europe of diversity," translated into sound. Finally, the monumental « Inondation » (2000/01) is a major work from the early days of multimedia composition. Conceived for three orchestral ensembles, electronics, and video, it unfolds an apocalyptic soundscape that connects mythical, religious, and historical layers. Heusinger composes catastrophe as a poetic metaphor — music balanced between vision and warning, between the force of nature and spiritual renewal.
