Fairy Tales

Description

Igor Stravinsky is famous for his sparkling fairy-tale legacy, including essential works like Petrouchka and L'Oiseau de feu. Among other favorites is the ballet Pulcinella, a charming blend of baroque theatricality, presented here in its concert version. The other works in this program are surprisingly less well-known: the luminous and symphonic Chant du rossignol and Le Baiser de la fée, set to music by Tchaikovsky, are both inspired by the tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Rare and astonishing, Le Faune et la Bergère is an ancient Greek tale that Stravinsky offered as a romantic and sensual gift to his young wife.
